GTA 6: You’ll Need to Keep an Eye on Fuel and Car Engine Condition
The fuel gauge becomes a real gameplay element in GTA 6. Rockstar also details engine wear and how journeys will remain smooth.

A Gauge That Changes the Player’s Habits
In previous games, a car could generally travel for miles without ever needing fuel. GTA 6 introduces two details directly visible for each vehicle: its fuel level and engine condition. The feature was detailed in Edge’s report following a demonstration at Rockstar North. It applies to leisurely drives as well as to a vehicle stolen at the last minute to escape a police response.
Realism Without the Chore
Rockstar doesn’t seem intent on turning GTA into a gas station simulator. Cars have a long range, and refueling is described as a quick process. The idea is to add an easy-to-understand risk: choosing a car that’s nearly out of fuel can complicate a chase, especially when the police are already on your tail. So sometimes you’ll need to check before speeding off.
Mechanical Condition Becomes a Factor
The presence of an engine health indicator also opens up possibilities: a vehicle that’s already damaged might not be the best choice for crossing Leonida. However, Edge doesn’t provide a comprehensive list of breakdowns, repairs, different fuel types, or mechanical damage. Those details will have to be tested after release. The system is part of a broader aim: to make every car useful, but imperfect.
An Impact on Heists and the Garage
The change makes the most sense when considered alongside car theft, GPS trackers, and heist planning. A discreet sedan with fuel in the tank may sometimes be a better choice than a supercar under surveillance. On Leonida Gang, vehicle pages can be updated, after in-game verification, with information that can actually be measured about their range and handling.
